As we are a new and upcoming magazine we decided to have our very first interview with a band that’s just breaking through onto the music scene. The thought police have been causing a stir within the rap rock genre. So hi guys and if you don’t mind were going to dive in with our first question which is “how did the group come together?

Ryan: well we’ve know each other for years through school and college and outside of school we always hung out so it was just kind of natural, Sam: before we formed The Thought Police all of us bar Billy had recently gone a separate ways from other bands, but we still wanted to play and enjoy music

You guys have been playing small gigs and clubs for a few years now and it’s only recently that the band has burst out into the mainstream. A lot of bands/ artists struggle to cope with the fame and we were just wondering how you are coping?

Sam: I think the way that we did it is better, I mean artists and bands that go straight into the limelight find it difficult to cope will all the travelling and the amount of attention there receiving, and often they disappear off the radar after one or two years, but because we’ve already had experience travelling around the country and played way over a hundred gigs were just more accustomed to it.

RapRock is not one of the most well known genres, although there have been some big bands and song come from it. Why have you as a band chosen to perform within this genre and not other more well known ones?

Ryan: it’s actually because of another local artist that we chose to do raprock, there was a rapper in the same area that we lived and he remixed it and rapped over it before placing it on YouTube, by chance Billy stumbled onto it searching for our original song. When we listened to it we loved it and so decided to start doing it ourselves but because we don’t have anyone on turntables we have to use samples of other songs.

You all seem pretty close, but some people will have noticed that this isn’t you original line up. So Lewis what’s it like being the new member of the band and was it a difficult decision to join the thought police?

Lewis: not really I mean like Ryan mentioned before we’ve all known each other for a long time before the band, as for joining no it wasn’t a hard decision because they originally asked me to join but I was already playing with another band which I didn’t really want to leave, unfortunately the band I was in ended up going separate ways so once the opportunity came to be part of the thought police I jumped at the chance

Billy you’ve been really quiet at the back there, so this next question will be for you only. What’s it like being the only female of the band, surely you must get fed up with boys on occasions. If so how do you cope with them?

Well as you can tell it is hard to get a word in sometimes because they all have big egos which they won’t thank me for mentioning. But i have to admit it’s not as bad as I first thought. I do tend to do all the tidying up after them when we’ve had practise or a gig which can get annoying but overall they just see me as another member of the band there’s no real male female divide between any of us.

Written Plans

Front page:

·         The main image I will take for my front page will be of a guitar player, the image will be taken from a low down angle looking up at the person giving a more domineering presence to the photo. The photo will be positioned to the left of my front page and will be almost the same size as the page. The models head will be slightly positioned over the masthead but not enough to prevent it from being readable.

·         There will be a second image on the front cover; this will be a lot smaller than my main image as to not take focus away from the main one. It will be placed in the bottom right hand corner of the page and will have a cover line directly above it relating to the image and the article that its part of. The image will be surrounded by some sort of boarder.

·         On the front cover I will have three cover lines, the first cover line will be placed at the base of my main image, it will be related to the main image and be in a completely different font to the other two cover lines. The size of this cover line will also be larger than the other two. My other two cover lines will be on the right hand side of the front page, one being placed just above my secondary image and the final cover line will be directly above that. The third cover line will be related to the article that is on the double page spread.

·         The barcode for my magazine will be placed in the bottom right hand corner of the front cover with the price of the magazine just above it. My issue information will be placed in the top right hand corner just underneath the title.

·         The font for my masthead will be: Ride the lightning, font for the main cover line will be: Infected, and the font for the other two cover lines will be: Rustik.

Contents page:

·         The contents page will carry on the same colour scheme as the front cover and will have a similar font for the title (font for contents page title will be: Rockster). The main image on the contents page will be placed just underneath the title and span the width of the whole page. The image will be of an entire band on stage.

·         Underneath the main image will be three columns of the same width containing information about what’s in the magazine. The column on the left hand side will change information each week as this will be a featured column, the middle column will be all about upcoming artists, so the title of this column will never change and the column on the right hand of the page will be all about tour and gig information for different bands.

·         The fonts I will be using for my contents are page are: main title – Rockster, column headings – Rustik, and for normal text within the three columns I will be using – stencil std.

·         Image wise on the contents page I will again be using two images; I’ve already mentioned my main image, so my secondary image will be off a singer with a microphone. It will be a close up shot of the model as you will only be able to see his head and the microphone. This image will be placed in the bottom right hand corner of my contents page.

Double page spread

·         My double page spread article will be an interview with a band called “The Thought Police” it will be a question an answer article with the questions being written in one colour and the answer will be in a different colour so that the readers can identify which is which. The questions will centre on how the band managed to break through from playing little gigs to playing stadiums. Some of the questions will be asked to the whole band while the rest of the questions will be asked to the individuals within the band.

·         The images that I am going to use for the double page spread will be another whole band picture but also placed at different positions of the double page will be images of the individual members of the band.

House style: I will be using for the magazine will be darker colours E.G. black, white, blue etc. Fonts that will be using are stereo typical of rock magazines as the genre of raprock is prodiminently rock with rap vocals over it so i will target more of a rock audience with my fonts.

·         The two different research methods I used to find the information I needed where, a questionnaire which I handed out to 20 random people and a video recording of me asking those questions.

Research conclusion:

From the results of my questionnaire and video interview, I can conclude that my raprock idea based on my results is a good one because these two are the most listened to music genre, the rap genre got 8 and close behind, the rock genre scored 7. although the people i asked said they bought magazines monthly the most i am going to stick with publishing my magazine quarterly as not as much happens within the raprock genre unlike more popular genres. i recieved positve feedback about the public reading about bands they havent heard of, out of the 20 people i questioned 12 of them said they would buy a magazine about bands and artists the havent heard of and my choice of music genre will be unknown to a lot of people. telling people about a new genre sohuldnt be a problem as from my results that 16 people out of the 20 already listen to 3 or more different music genres. Also my results have shown that the price range £2-£3 will be the best to sell my magazine in. They also give me an idea as to who to interview with people not seeming to mind if it’s the whole band and just one member of a band or solo artist as they both scored 10 points each. another peice of information that i got from the questionnaire is that people tend to buy magazines if they come with a freebie, so i will have to look to include a freebie when publishing my magazine. Before I handed out the questionnaire I already had an idea of what was to go in my magazine and from the results i recieved the public said they wanted to read about, tour information, interviews, competitions, album reviews and song reviews which is pretty much what i had in mind anyway.
